John 1:1-18

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full or grace and truth.

John 1:14

The magical season of Christmas. Can you feel it? I can feel it still. The same mystery, excitement, and anticipation as I did as a child. God entered my consciousness in such a real way many years before I understood that I could have a personal, meaningful relationship with Him.

The simplicity of the Christmases celebrated as a child with our church family and friends were so precious and sweet. Reflecting on it now, to some it might have appeared to be comical. Shepherds in bathrobes with dish towels on their heads. Wisemen with aluminum foil crowns and eyeglasses worn to keep from stumbling in the dimly lit sanctuary. Angels wrapped in white sheets with tinsel haloes… I, however, could look past these less than perfect bits of symbolism to become a participant in the incredible story. A cold, dark night with clear, starry skies in a small town. I could identify. Joseph and Mary in a stable. Growing up on a farm, I understood this setting well. Shepherds in the fields watching their sheep. Our family raised registered sheep, and Dad supplemented our income by sheering sheep for our neighbors in the spring. The unspeakable fear and awe that must have been felt when the angels appeared in the sky to proclaim the miraculous birth. My heart still quickens as I ponder it.

Quiet, peaceful, reflection, but also full participation. Embrace the mysterion. Only our God can do that. My prayer for you during this Holy Season is that you make time to pause, reflect and identify with the Christmas story. It was all for You. And me. And those people I am not so fond of. Consider. Be amazed. Be grateful but most of all, be very, very Thankful.

Much love and blessings to you all.

Collect:  O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy him perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit he lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting.  Amen. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

On this Christmas Eve, have I taken time to prepare my heart for the Nativity of my Lord?
